Key Takeaways:
- A man in Montgomery County, Texas has been arrested after allegedly giving his pregnant partner an abortion pill without her knowledge or consent, causing the death of her baby.
- This is the second such case in Texas in a matter of weeks (but yet another case amongst several others all over the country) – a pattern that reveals a deeply troubling reality about unregulated, mail-order abortion pills.
- Texas law bans mail-order abortion pills, yet they are still being delivered to residents with virtually no oversight.
- There are virtually zero safeguards on chemical abortion drugs, leaving women vulnerable.
A woman in Montgomery County, Texas was rushed to the hospital last month and suffered a miscarriage under suspicious circumstances. She told investigators she believed the father of her baby had secretly given her an abortion pill without her knowledge or consent. She had already told him clearly: she wanted to keep the baby, yet he was pressuring her to abort.
Her baby was stillborn.
Jon Rueben Gabriel Demeter of Spring, Texas was arrested on February 23rd and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury. He currently sits in jail without bond while his partner grieves the loss of her baby.
Just weeks ago, an Illinois man was arrested for drugging his partner, causing her to lose the baby at seven weeks.
“The silence from the abortion industry on these cases is deafening. They knew cases like this could happen and yet they continue to push easy access to these pills for literally anyone who wants them for any reason,” said Abby Johnson, CEO and Founder of And Then There Were None and ProLove Ministries.
Mail-Order Abortion Pills Are Enabling Coercion and Violence Against Women
There are no precautions at all surrounding abortion pills. The current Administration has done little to not only prevent cases like this from happening.
These pills are being ordered online with no in-person doctor’s visit, no verification, and no accountability. They are being shipped into states like Texas where abortion is illegal. And they are being used as weapons — handed to women without their knowledge or consent by the very people who are supposed to love and protect them.
Abortion pills make up over 60% of all abortions in the United States. They are easy to access and cheaper than surgical abortion. Anyone can go online and get them, even for free. Recently, Abby Johnson tested how easy it is to get a hold of abortion pills by going through Aid Access’ website. This is the same company that is being sued for wrongful death for giving abortion pills to a man in Texas that used them to spike the drink of his partner, causing the death of his unborn baby.
“While there are news stories about men being arrested for forcing their partners to abortion their babies through secretly administering the abortion pill, it begs the question of exactly how many men are doing this,” said Johnson. “I think the number of men who are caught is very small compared to the number of men who are carrying out their plans to end the lives of their babies without the knowledge of their partners. And what about those women or young girls in cases of incest and rape? The ease of access to abortion pills is incredibly harmful to women.”
No Safeguards in Place
Texas has taken steps — Governor Greg Abbott signed the Texas Woman and Child Protection Act, which creates civil penalties of up to $100,000 for producers and distributors of chemical abortion pills in the state. That’s meaningful. But pills are still arriving. Men are still ordering them. Women are still being harmed.
The Biden administration gutted the in-person dispensing requirements that served as a basic safety guardrail. The Trump administration has not restored them. In fact, the FDA approved a generic version of the abortion pill under President Trump’s Administration.
In a survey of 1,600 likely voters last August, only 16 percent of respondents thought the abortion pill was “ very safe”, direct evidence that the message of pro-abortion activists that the pill is “safer than Tylenol” is failing. A peer-reviewed study also demonstrates that the messaging is untrue, yet this is the first survey to show that it is not resonating.
