“Planned Parenthood is notorious for cutting corners and demanding that their staff often put patients at risk in order to make sure abortions are done because that’s how they make money,” said Abby Johnson, founder and CEO of And Then There Were None and ProLove Ministries. “No one grows up wanting to work in an abortion clinic and I implore these former workers at Planned Parenthood Omaha to reach out to us. You deserve better. Women deserve better. We can help.”

Questionable Practices

Some of the things that former staff at Planned Parenthood Omaha revealed were:

  • Testing for STDs like HIV and syphilis were inconsistent so the clinic had to pause those tests while management “sorted through whether past tests were accurate.”
  • That some of the employees had no idea what, if any, follow-up ever happened with patients after their abortions.
  • That one of the former employees, a nurse, said she felt pressured to be in the room and assist with a surgical abortion because she was the only one there. The clinic’s standard procedure was that they always had to have two nurses in the room during abortions.

The turnover rate was very high – about 44% in 2023 – as well. Healthcare workers won the right to unionize in 2022 and the next year during negotiations with Planned Parenthood, turnover was up to 44%.

Due to this high turnover, former employees in the story said that training suffered and they were asked to do way more with fewer people. They said leadership and management were “disconnected from reality” and not transparent in their communications.

Construction in the Clinic

Planned Parenthood Omaha has been in the midst of a large construction project as they attempt to expand their abortion operation. One employee said that the fumes and noise were so terrible for staff and patients that she requested the clinic limit services or close during parts of the construction to protect patients and employees. Her concerns were dismissed.

She worked for Planned Parenthood for six years and was ultimately laid off during a “restructuring.” She told the newspaper: “I think you’re faced with enough dismissiveness over time that we weren’t surprised when staff started leaving over it.”

No Nurses at Planned Parenthood Omaha

The one nurse that was quoted throughout the story said that she was asked to break clinic procedure at least twice during abortions. The clinic procedure demanded two nurses be present during abortions but because of staffing issues, she was asked to be the only one present.

Planned Parenthood Omaha has denied her claims.

This nurse left in March and the only other nurse at this abortion clinic left in April, leaving Planned Parenthood Omaha without any nurses. Yet the abortion clinic claims they have hired more staff and will do abortions in May.
