Key Takeaways:
- The nation’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, has closed 70 clinics in 2025, according to a report from the nonprofit.
- This is a little more than 10% of all of their clinics.
- Planned Parenthood said they closed the clinics due to a lack of government funding.
- There are 13 times as many Federally Qualified Health Centers as Planned Parenthood clinics, where people can go for quality, low-cost healthcare.
The federal government has cut off some funding from Planned Parenthood through Medicaid reimbursements and Title X funding, which has resulted in the closure of about 70 clinics nationwide.
Alexis McGill Johnson, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, is unhappy with the government for taking away taxpayer dollars from her organization.
“[The government is] intentionally dismantling health care for patients most in need and pushing Planned Parenthood health centers further to the financial brink,” Johnson said in a statement.
President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill removed taxpayer funding from any organization that commits abortion for a period of one year. In the spring, the president also removed funding from organizations that promoted DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) policies.
“Planned Parenthood’s pity party is of their own making – all they had to do to keep taxpayer dollars was to remove DEI and abortion,” said Abby Johnson, former Planned Parenthood director and CEO and founder of And Then There Were None and ProLove Ministries. “Planned Parenthood’s bread and butter is abortion. If they wanted to truly serve the community and low-income women and their families, then they would remove abortion from their clinics so they could obtain Medicaid funding at the very least. But they will never do that.”
Planned Parenthood’s Business Model is Based on Abortion
According to Planned Parenthood’s own annual report, abortion is where they make the most revenue, and taxpayer dollars are where they make the most revenue.
The number of abortions Planned Parenthood committed in 2023-24 was 402,230, an increase of 9,500 from the year prior and the most they’ve ever reported. They received $792.2 million, equivalent to approximately $2 million per day.
The number of patients they saw only increased by 1%, but overall has decreased by 23% since 2013. They are closing abortion clinics all over the country because “Trump has cut funding.” Meanwhile, the abortion giant boasts over $2 billion in income and holds $2.5 billion in assets.
Where does the money go?
One must wonder how Planned Parenthood can hold over $2.5 billion in assets and rake in $2 billion a year and still not be able to properly clean their abortion clinics or keep them open at all?
In the New York Times expose about Planned Parenthood that ran in February 2025, former employees revealed just how terrible things are at these clinics:
“We’re begging for supplies, and we get denied constantly because they just can’t afford it,” said Ashley Schmidt, a former Planned Parenthood employee.
What’s the problem then? Why can’t Planned Parenthood make do with killing 402,230 innocent unborn babies a year, plus all the taxpayer money they get, plus all the donations? From that New York Times story, it boils down to priorities: politics and lawyers over women:
Over the last five years, the national office has distributed more than $899 million to affiliates to help them deliver care, but none of it went directly to medical services. By charter, the mission of Planned Parenthood Federation of America is to “provide leadership, advocacy and education in the field of reproductive health care.”
Much of the national funding to affiliates went to legal support, public campaigns to expand abortion access, and subsidies for patient navigators who help patients access abortions.
“How our government, and Republicans who have for years claimed to want to defund Planned Parenthood but who are backing down when it’s time to put words into action, can possibly continue to give almost $2 million a day to this organization is beyond reason,” said Abby.
Actual Medical Services Provided by Planned Parenthood Barely Exist
Thanks to the Charlotte Lozier Institute for these helpful bullet points that break down just how much money Planned Parenthood gets and how many services they don’t actually provide – except for abortions:
- Planned Parenthood performed a record 402,230 abortions in 2022-23 – an increase of over 9,500 (2%) from the previous year, and an increase of 23% since 2013.
- The number of patients increased by just 1% from the previous year and was down by 23% from 2013.
- In 2022-23, 96.9% of the time, women seeking help related to their pregnancy at Planned Parenthood were sold an abortion rather than given prenatal care, provided care for a miscarriage, or helped to make an adoption plan. Prenatal services, miscarriage care, and adoption referrals accounted for only 1.7% (7,008), 0.9% (3,598), and 0.5% (2,148), respectively.
- For every adoption referral in 2022-23, Planned Parenthood performed 187 abortions. Over the past 10 annual reports, the ratio was approximately 136 abortions for every one adoption referral.
- According to data from Planned Parenthood’s own annual reports, since 2013:
- Total services are down more than 10%.
- With changing practice guidelines, total cancer screening and prevention services have dropped by 54%, including declines of 61% for breast exams and 54% for pap tests.
- Prenatal services are down 63%.
- Contraceptive services are down 38%.
- Taxpayer funding in the form of government grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements hit $792.2 million, over $2 million per day– an increase of $92.9 million from the previous report and representing 39% of Planned Parenthood’s overall revenue.
- Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding has increased by 50% since 2013.
Low-Income Individuals Have an Option for Healthcare Other Than Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood believes women and low-income individuals will have no options for actual healthcare if they close their clinics, but basic statistics prove them wrong. There are 13 times (over 9,100) more Federally Qualified Health Centers, which offer free/low-cost healthcare but not abortions, than Planned Parenthood clinics. And they serve over 21 million individuals every year, which is eight times the number who go to Planned Parenthood for services.
The chart below from the Charlotte Lozier Institute gives a good comparison.
